Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and Biological Hygiene.  "Recipe for a Healthy Mouth: Growing the Orofacial-Cranial-Respiratory Complex"

This course offers an introduction to orofacial myofunctional disorders and myofunctional therapy in a hygienist’s clinical setting, and its vital role in growing healthy children and healing our adult patients. When we know more, we can do so much more to help our patients thrive. Learn what orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are and what part they play in chronic illnesses as well as broken teeth, malocclusion, periodontal inflammation, and dental caries. Learn the OMD signs, and then how orofacial myofunctional therapy plays a part in helping heal our patients. Awareness of OMDs is an “ah-ha” moment to start the healing process. Learn how to prevent problems before they start; educate patients on the importance of habit elimination, lip seal, and proper tongue rest posture.

Learning Objectives

  • Define Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
  • List the goals of myofunctional therapy.
  • Identify orofacial myofunctional disorders and improper muscle patterns.
  • Learn how OMD’s contribute to dental diseases such as periodontal disease, caries, malocclusion, TMD and xerostomia.
  • Understand the role of myofunctional therapy in the dental office.
  • Learn how noxious habits might affect children’s growth and development.
